How health coverage affects your 2019 federal income tax return

If you haven’t filed your 2019 taxes, or filed but failed to “reconcile” your premium tax credit, use the information on these pages. Some links may point to IRS information about filing this year’s taxes, so read any IRS pages carefully.
You should’ve already filed your 2019 taxes, but if you haven’t, you should do so immediately. When you file your taxes for the 2019 tax filing year:
  • You’ll provide additional information when you file your 2019 federal income tax return.
  • You may have to complete one or two new tax forms.
  • You may have to use a tax tool to find 2019 Silver premiums to complete your tax return.
  • Unlike in past tax years, if you didn’t have coverage during 2019, the fee no longer applies. This means you don’t need an exemption in order to avoid the penalty.
